Father’s Day is right around the corner, and if you are anything like me, you may have put off making a handmade gift for until the last minute, but that is ok! I’ve got you covered with this Homemade BBQ Sauce and Dry Rub that are quick and easy to make, but also family favorites in my house.

To make the Mason Jar Labels:
- Print the labels on a full-sheet of nice card stock paper made for home printers. Buy a good quality paper. I like kraft colored cardstock paper for a more masculine feel for these gifts. Printing can be done with a color laser printer at home (if you use an ink jet printer wait for the labels to dry before you cut them so they don’t smudge) or by taking the file to office supply store like Staples.
- To cut out the labels use a 2.5″ hole punch (available at craft stores or online) to cut out each label, or if you don’t want to invest in the paper crafting tool, simply cut by hand with sharp scissors.
- Use a dab of glue ( I like using a basic glue stick) to adhere the label to the lid before applying the screw on band.
- If using plain printer paper, skip the glue or use a spray adhesive according to directions on the can, to avoid the labels from wrinkling and puckering.

One of my favorite things about this Kansas City Style Barbeque Sauce (aside from its great flavor) is how easy it is to make! There is no straining or pureeing because it gets all its flavor from herbs and spices from your pantry, so you can skip those messy steps!
Kansas City Style Barbeque is known for its sweet and smoky flavor, if you like Sweet Baby Ray’s Sauce this recipe is for you! I adapted my version of from a highly rated recipe on Allrecipes, and once I made it I knew I was never going back to bottled BBQ Sauce again! This recipe relies on liquid smoke flavor to get that smokiness that Kansas City Sauce is known for, I reduced the amount the original recipe called for by half, and think it is perfect!
The Best Kansas City Style Barbeque Sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 teaspoons hickory-flavored liquid smoke
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/8 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- pinch cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper.
A day before, in a large saucepan over medium heat, mix together the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, wine vinegar, molasses, liquid smoke, and butter. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, celery seed, cinnamon, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
Reduce heat to low, and simmer for up to 20 minutes. For a thicker sauce, simmer longer, and for thinner, less time is needed. A sauce can also be thinned using a bit of water if necessary. Brush sauce onto any kind of meat during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
This is my favorite dry rub recipe, and it makes a big batch! I was originally going to package it up in 4 oz Decorative Quilted Jelly Jars but I used them all at Christmas to package homemade gifts, and my Walmart order of replacements was delayed, so for the purpose of this blog post I had to package it up in a larger jar.
This is my favorite all-purpose Creole Seasoning Blend! If you are familiar with Upstate New York, you may have heard of the restaurant that developed this recipe, Dinosaur Bar-b-que, it is well known and loved around here, and people claim it is the best BBQ in New York.
Like I said this recipe makes a large batch, but I love to always have some on hand so I don’t mind, if you don’t happen to have a half a cup of paprika kicking around your pantry, this recipe is pretty easily scaled down.
Bar-b-que Creole Seasoning Blend
This recipe for Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Creole Seasoning Blend from the Upstate New York Cookbook Tastes of the Town Cookbook is a great all-purpose Creole Mix. Use on chicken, seafood or steak.
- 1/2 cup paprika
- 1/2 cup granulated garlic
- 1/4 cup granulated onion
- 3 tablespoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons white pepper
- 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup dried oregano
- 1/4 cup dried thyme
- 2 teaspoons cumin
- 2 tablespoons sugar
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Store in an airtight plastic or glass container with a lid.
This is a great seasoning for seafood and steak.
